Use ProNest LT if you cut on Hypertherm plasma hardware. SureCut, meaning True Hole, Rapid Part and PlateSaver, is tied to their machines and produces hole quality and cut sequencing no generic nester can reproduce, including this one. That is a hardware-level advantage and it is real. Use Lapas if you are not a Hypertherm shop, or you need to work outside Windows, or you want to evaluate on real files without a trial clock running. Lapas has a free plan with no expiry; ProNest LT is $29.99 a month per user after a 7 day trial.

Where ProNest LT genuinely wins

Worth saying plainly, because most comparison pages will not.

  • SureCut is a hardware advantage, not a feature-list item

    True Hole, Rapid Part and PlateSaver work because Hypertherm controls the software and the plasma source together. On their machines that means bolt-ready holes without a secondary operation. No third-party nesting tool can reproduce it, and this one does not pretend to.

  • Post processors that are known to work

    Output validated against specific controllers with vendor support behind it. Lapas exports DXF for you to post yourself, and its G-code export is beta and unvalidated across controllers. If you need proven machine output today, that is a real reason to pay.

  • Training and support are in the price

    Plans include support, training and updates from a company that has done this for decades. Lapas support is email and chat from the person who built it, which is fast but is not a training department.

  • Plasma process depth

    Lead-in strategy, cut sequencing and consumable-aware parameters built for plasma specifically. Lapas handles plasma-width kerf and spacing well, but it is a nester, not a plasma CAM package.

ProNest LT is licensed Windows software with no public build, so it cannot be run headless against a fixed instance set and no honest measured comparison exists. Moving a job from ProNest LT to Lapas

    If you run Hypertherm hardware and use SureCut, do not migrate. You would be giving up the thing you are paying for.

    Where Lapas fits alongside it is quoting and evaluation: nest a prospective job in the browser and get the sheet count before the job is committed to production.

    Export the parts as DXF from the same CAD you already feed ProNest, and upload them.

How much does ProNest LT cost?

The entry plan, Smart Start, is $29.99 per month per user according to Hypertherm’s subscription pages in July 2026. All plans come with a 7 day free trial and include support, training and updates. Costs for additional seats are quoted separately.

Does ProNest LT run on Mac or Linux?

No, it is a Windows desktop application. That is the most common practical reason shops look for an alternative, along with the absence of a free tier.

Is Lapas free?

Yes, with no credit card and no expiry: 5 new projects a month, unlimited re-nests of any project you have already started, no cap on parts per job, and the full nesting engine rather than a cut-down one. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed annually.

Can Lapas do True Hole?

No. True Hole is part of Hypertherm’s SureCut technology and depends on their plasma source as well as their software. A third-party nesting tool cannot implement it. If bolt-ready holes without secondary operations matter to you, ProNest LT on Hypertherm hardware is the right answer.

Can Lapas post directly to my plasma table?

Not reliably. Lapas exports the nested layout as DXF for you to post from your existing plasma CAM. G-code export exists but is beta and has not been validated across controllers, so verify it before cutting. Validated machine output is exactly what ProNest LT is for.

Is Lapas worth trying if I already pay for ProNest LT?

Possibly, for quoting rather than production. The free plan costs nothing, runs in a browser away from the CAD workstation, and gives you a sheet count and a PDF report you can price a job from. Keep ProNest for what it is good at.
